Background of the Study
In Nigerian digital communication, code‑mixing—alternating between languages within a single conversation—is a common practice that reflects the country’s multilingual identity. Facebook group interactions provide a unique setting where code‑mixing is not only prevalent but also serves as a marker of cultural affiliation and social identity (Adetayo, 2023). In these groups, users blend indigenous languages with English to convey humor, establish solidarity, and negotiate social boundaries. The informal nature of group discussions fosters a relaxed environment where linguistic boundaries are fluid, allowing for creative language use. This study appraises code‑mixing practices in Facebook groups by analyzing conversational exchanges, the frequency of language alternation, and the contextual triggers that prompt code‑mixing. It explores how digital affordances and group dynamics shape bilingual communication, and how these practices impact the clarity, cohesion, and cultural expression within online communities (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although code‑mixing is widely observed in Nigerian Facebook group interactions, there is limited systematic research examining its patterns and functions in these digital spaces. The informal context of group discussions leads to complex language alternation practices that are not well documented, creating a gap in our understanding of bilingual communication online. This lack of focused research limits our ability to analyze the sociocultural and communicative implications of code‑mixing, hindering efforts to develop comprehensive models of digital multilingualism. Addressing this gap is crucial for understanding how language mixing influences identity formation and social interaction in Nigerian digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To document code‑mixing patterns in Nigerian Facebook group interactions.
To analyze contextual triggers for language alternation.
To assess the impact of code‑mixing on group identity and communication.
Research Questions
What are the prevalent code‑mixing practices in Facebook groups?
What factors trigger code‑mixing in these interactions?
How does code‑mixing affect social identity within the group?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed appraisal of code‑mixing in Nigerian Facebook group interactions, enhancing our understanding of digital multilingual practices. The findings will contribute to sociolinguistic theory and inform communication strategies in multilingual online environments, benefiting educators, policymakers, and digital media practitioners (Adetayo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study
